The Gaithersburg Book Festival is an enormous undertaking that would not be possible without the generous assistance of numerous volunteers.
We are now accepting volunteers for the 2013 Festival. We have numerous volunteer opportunities associated with putting on this world-class event. Please see the job descriptions below, then take a moment to let us know that you’re interested in helping.
Fill out the Volunteer Sign-up Form and we’ll be in touch as May 18, 2013, approaches to find out more about your interests and availability and to provide training.
Note: You must be at least 16 years old to apply. SSL hours are available.
Volunteer Job Descriptions
Author Pavilion Assistant
- Help set up, maintain and clean up site
- Assist manager with preparing stage/tent for each presentation
- Manage seating/lines
- Other jobs as needed
Check-In Assistant (VIP’s, Introducers, Escorts and Volunteers)
- Help set up, maintain and clean up site
- Assist manager with check-in of individuals
- Distribute items to tents and other areas as needed
- Other jobs as needed
General Information Booth/Greeter
- Answer questions about festival activities and locations
- Help with any problems brought to your attention
- Retain lost and found items
- Pass out festival programs
Writing Workshops Assistant
- Help set up, maintain and clean up site
- Assist with registration
- Assist instructors and attendees as needed
Children’s Village Assistant
- Coordinate and assist with stage performances
- Assist with workshops and activities
- Assist with groups of children in Story Time tent
Hall of Exhibiting Authors Assistant
- Keep area neat and free of obstacles
- Answer questions, help people find authors
- Assist authors as needed
- Assist with book signing lines as needed
Parking Lot and Shuttle Stop Monitor
- Assist with VIP and Handicapped parking (help to find spots)
- Direct traffic in and out of lot, check for passes
- Monitor lines at shuttle stop, assist with drop-off and pick-up
Floater
- Relieve volunteers as needed
- Must be knowledgeable and flexible to work in any job area
Set-up/Tear down
- Assist with set-up of chairs and tables the day before and/or on the day of the event
- Assist with the taking down and stacking of tables and chairs
- Assist with taking down signage
- Other jobs as needed
