The women of the AAUW collect, sort and sell more than 30,000 used books to approximately 850 customers. They have a wide and extensive collection including books about art, African American and Jewish interests, business, classics, cookbooks, engineering, math, gardening, health & fitness, nature, science, travel and women’s studies.  Being in the heart of a technology and medical research area provides an exceptional collection of science-related books. Additionally, books for children and teens are sorted into a special section that is a favorite among local home schoolers. Most books are $3.00 or less!

The Gaithersburg Branch of the AAUW recruits approximately 200 volunteers to support the sale.  Volunteers include AAUW members, residents from Asbury, students in local schools and colleges, community groups (friends or libraries, support services organizations, especially those doing language training) and community residents doing court ordered community service hours. Each year, the AAUW makes approximately $1,600 that they use for scholarships for Montgomery County residents to attend Montgomery College and the Universities at Shady Grove, to support a mentoring program for girls at Gaithersburg Middle School and to support national AAUW scholarships and fellowships.

Any books that aren’t sold are donated to Montgomery County Friends of the Library and other groups including several local schools, shelters and social services programs.

Each year, Moyer & Sons assists with moving the books to Asbury and Wonder Books takes the remaining books for distribution. Gaithersburg Storage provides storage bins for books collected throughout the year.

Make sure you stop by the sale.
