Give a (Children’s) Book: New Business Partners with Book Festival on Holiday Book Drive
A note from the owners of the Kentlands Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa
When John and I opened the Kentlands Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa, we not only wanted to create an oasis of wellness but also we wanted to open a business that would be an integral part of the community. Gaithersburg is a giving community: We have witnessed the generosity of the business owners and those who work here, the government officials and residents countless times in the few short months that the spa has been open. John and I are touched, inspired and grateful to be a part of this community, and giving back is high on our list.
How did we come up with this idea? As both John and I love to read, this children’s book drive marries our personal commitment to education and the literacy cause, my personal roots in the publishing industry and with children’s books and our new spa business. With the Gaithersburg Book Festival (GBF) right at our doorstep, we thought, “What a perfect opportunity to join forces. Let’s see what we can do!” The GBF chair and Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, and Stephanie Brant, principal of the Gaithersburg Elementary School, could not have been more receptive or helpful.
A good story and book can spark a child’s imagination and curiosity and can bring smiles to kids of all ages. Reading, a foundation block of learning, is a rich activity. And, reading to a child and with a child is one of the most rewarding experiences. We hope that by sharing books and developing home libraries, we will be able to extend these joys and rewards to many children and their families.
We thank in advance the many community members who will come to the spa to donate, the staff of the Gaithersburg Book Festival, the Gaithersburg Holiday Giving Program and Gaithersburg Elementary School. We hope this is the first of many collaborations, and we look forward to getting to know all of you and the Gaithersburg community in the years to come.
