Graphic Novelist Gareth Hinds Brings Shakespeare to Teens
by Teresa Hughes
Want to introduce a young person to Shakespeare’s works? This just might be the ticket! Tell them that a graphic novelist with 10 years prior video game designing experience has released a new graphic novel, “Macbeth.”
The Gaithersburg Book Festival is extremely fortunate to have Gareth Hinds return this year with his latest beautifully illustrated work.
In a recent review, the New York Times wrote: “The play [Macbeth] also…features some epic fight scenes and lots and lots of blood, and Hinds makes the most of these opportunities to show how naturally Shakespeare takes to the comics form. … The art is more realistic illustration than the familiar bursting-off-the-page comics style, but that is fitting. The book feels like a remarkably faithful rendering of the world of the play.”
Gareth also was featured in a Gazette article about his appearance at last year’s Gaithersburg Book Festival.
Come hear Gareth speak on Saturday, May 16th from 3:15-4:15 in the Ogden Nash Pavilion. Gareth Hinds will autograph purchased copies directly after his presentation at 4:15.
Gareth Hinds is the creator of several critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics – most recently “Romeo & Juliet,” which Kirkus Reviews called “a stunning visual reading,” and “The Odyssey,” which received four starred reviews and was on numerous “best-of” lists. His next literary classic graphic novel is “Macbeth,” which will be published in February 2015. Gareth’s books can be found in bookstores and English classrooms across the country, and his illustrations have appeared in such diverse venues as the Society of Illustrators, the New York Historical Society and more than a dozen published video games. He lives in Takoma Park, Md.
