Why Volunteer at the Gaithersburg Book Festival?
The Gaithersburg Book Festival depends on more than 200 volunteers to help us put on an event that is quickly becoming one of the best literary events in the Mid-Atlantic! No experience is necessary. All we ask is that you bring a warm smile and a helpful attitude! We’ll bring the award-winning authors, once in a lifetime opportunities and your very own volunteer t-shirt.
So why volunteer? Instead of us telling you ourselves, we’re going to let one of our long-time volunteers, Mathy Milling Downing, do so.
How many times have you volunteered at the Gaithersburg Book Festival and what is your role?
I have served at the last four Book Festivals. My participation has included author receptions, author introductions, pavilion manager and pavilion stage manager.
Why did you decide to become a volunteer with the Festival?
I am a teacher at Gaithersburg Elementary School, and a great lover of books. Obviously, Stephanie Brant, my principal, and Jennifer Nicholson, our lovely media specialist, encouraged my interest in this activity. [Editor’s note: Both Stephanie Brant and Jennifer Nicholson are members of the Gaithersburg Book Festival committee.] I have actually had the pleasure of meeting a few favorite authors.
What has been your favorite moment as a volunteer at the Festival?
I got to introduce Mary Downing Hahn, a favorite author of both of my daughters. To meet Jon Scieszka, the author of “The Stinky Cheese Man,” another favorite read aloud at school, was also fun.
What advice would you give a new volunteer starting out with the Festival?
Go for it and be willing to take on any of the jobs for the day. Figure out the job that suits you best by experiencing more than one option.
Who would be your ultimate dream author to see at the Gaithersburg Book Festival ?
I enjoy meeting new authors. By listening to presentations at the festival, I have had my eyes opened to new adventures and possibilities that can only be found in great literature.
More volunteers are needed in almost every area of the Festival. Shifts are still available before, during and after (to assist with clean-up) the Festival. Please join us and help fellow book-lovers navigate the variety of author panels, presentations and other fun-filled activities at the Gaithersburg Book Festival. Interested in volunteering?
